Waaruit deze literatuur bestaat
De synthese loopt voor op de primaire literatuur hier — reviews en meta-analyses die voortbouwen op een bescheiden aantal onderliggende studies. Behandel zelfverzekerde conclusies met de voorzichtigheid die de steekproefgrootte verdient.
Het onderscheid dat het meest van belang is, is tussen synthese en primaire research. Een meta-analyse bundelt onderzoeken en is het dichtst bij een vaststaand antwoord dat een veld produceert. Een narratieve review is de lezing van dezelfde materialen door één groep en kan selectief zijn zonder oneerlijk te zijn. Ze samen tellen, wat de meeste citatietellingen doen, verdoezelt precies datgene wat je wilt weten.

Wanneer de wekelijkse oogst een nieuw artikel over dit onderwerp vindt, veranderen deze tellingen en verandert de karakterisering met hen mee. Dat is het punt: een handgeschreven bewering over hoe sterk een bewijsbasis is, begint te vervagen op de dag dat het wordt geschreven.
Publicatietype wordt genomen zoals de bron het registreert. Dat is imperfect — tijdschriften labelen inconsistent, en een artikel dat als een "review" is geïndexeerd, kan een systematische zijn — dus behandel de banden als benaderend. Ze zijn nauwkeurig genoeg om een trialliteratuur van een commentaarliteratuur te onderscheiden, wat het onderscheid is dat ertoe doet.
