Gecombineerde analyses van probiotica, prebiotica en synbiotica voor symptomen van depressie en angst rapporteren kleine positieve effecten [1][2][4], met een systematische review die compatibele conclusies bereikt [3]. Op het eerste gezicht is dat een positieve bevinding.

In combinatie met de studiekenmerken is het veel zwakker. De studies zijn klein, kort, gebruiken verschillende stammen in verschillende doses en meten symptoomschalen in niet-clinische populaties waar regressie naar het gemiddelde aanzienlijk is.   • Pouchitis na colectomie, waar bewijs relatief sterk is.

Wat deze gemeen hebben: een specifieke aandoening, een specifieke stam en een plausibele korte causale keten. Stemming heeft geen van die dingen.

Wat te doen in plaats daarvan

Voed de bacteriën die je al hebt. Vezels en gefermenteerde voedingsmiddelen veranderen het microbioom betrouwbaarder dan het inslikken van een capsule met organismen die meestal niet koloniseren — zie vezels. Het is minder verkoopbaar en aanzienlijk beter onderbouwd.
