Probiotisch bewijs is stam-specifiek. Wat waar is voor L. plantarum 299v is niet automatisch waar voor iets anders dat dezelfde soortnaam deelt.
Waarvoor het is bestudeerd
Gerandomiseerd onderzoek toont verminderde opgeblazenheid en pijn bij IBS; aparte onderzoeken suggereren verbeterde opname van niet-heemijzer. [1]
IBS-onderzoeken zijn heterogeen en de placebo-respons bij IBS is berucht groot.
Waarom de stamcode belangrijk is
Probiotische effecten zijn stam-specifiek, en dit is geen technische kwestie. Twee stammen van dezelfde soort kunnen verschillen in welke oppervlakte-eiwitten ze tot expressie brengen, of ze maagzuur overleven, of ze zich überhaupt aan intestinaal slijm hechten, en wat ze daar produceren. Een onderzoek dat voordeel aantoont voor L. plantarum 299v toont het aan voor L. plantarum 299v — niet voor de soort.
De praktische consequentie is dat een label dat alleen een soortnaam vermeldt, niet verifieerbaar is. Als de volledige aanduiding ontbreekt, kan er geen gepubliceerd bewijs worden gekoppeld aan wat er in de capsule zit.
